My Top Tips for Ultimate Hygge

You may have heard of this little thing called ‘Hygge’ which is sweeping the lifestyle world. You may also be thinking what on earth is it?

Well Hygge (pronounced hue- gah) is the danish way of living. The word roughly translates to ‘cosiness’.

Hygge is not about ‘things’ its more about a feeling. That feeling of cosiness and comfort. That feeling you get when its raining outside and you are indoors wrapped up in blankets listening to the rain tapping against the window, surrounded by candles and sipping a hot chocolate. That feeling on Christmas Day when your surrounded by people you love, drink in your hand and gathered around the christmas tree…that feeling is Hygge.

The Danish are among the happiest people in Europe according to surveys and people wanted to know why! So journalists took to Denmark to seek out the reasons as to what makes their way of life so different to ours!

The answer is not exactly rocket science.

They simply make time for the things that are important to them. They make time to see people, to have a cup of tea and snuggle up with a book, to light a room full of candles and make some kind of sexy cheese and meat platter for dinner.

Your perfect idea of Hygge might be completely different to mine but there are certain aspects which make for the ultimate Hygge situation!

1. You need to set the atmosphere

Turn off the main lights, light some candles, switch on some little lamps and instantly feel more cosy. I like to spritz a little bit of my favourite fragrance too, just for a little bit of extra luxury and relaxation. Lately I’ve been obsessing over Jo Malone Peony & Blush Suede.

2. Find something amazing to eat/ drink/ both

Hot chocolate, a cup of tea, a huge hunk of pizza or a bowl full of that hot casserole thats been bubbling away in the slow cooker since 7am… whatever you fancy, have.

3. Get cosy

Get all the sassy winter blankets you can find and pile them high. Wrap yourself up like a burrito and don’t move until y’know you need a wee or a top up of tea.

4. Have a hot bath with all the essential oils

I’m still obsessed by Lush products but when I’m in need of complete luxury, i switch to bath oils. Aromatherapy Associates Deep Relax is  incredible as is Neom’s Daily De-stress bath oil. They aren’t especially cheap but invest in one and use it only when your feeling particularly Hygge-esq.

5. Invite someone over to Hygge with you
Grab your significant other, your bestie or your dog (shout out to my boo Harry who is my main Hygge partner- soz husband!) and snuggle up, stick on a film or a Netflix series and you’re set!

What is your idea of the perfect Hygge situation?

I love fairy lights to set the scene. I don’t have a working fire, but I have a lovely fireplace which is packed with fairylights. Add some fragranced WoodWick candles and put the heating on. Snuggle under a blanket with the cat on your lap and a bit of cake. Heaven!

I think you don’t need even to turn off main light as it seems in Denmark noone really have bright bulbs or light is only focused above table but not in the middle of room lightening all room). May be there is but i didn’t see such yet)) So it’s Hygge all the time:D Unless you are in the office)
